Fresh Angles Series: Bea Arthur, Domestic Violence, and Pretty Padded Room

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

By JK Fowler

Bea Arthur graduated from Columbia University in 2008 with both an MA and EdM in Counseling Psychology. Since then, she has worked with a variety of populations including addicts in recovery, mothers in crisis, and most recently, survivors of domestic violence. No matter how different the client, her approach has always been based in the belief that counseling should, above all, feel safe. By creating an online platform that conducts real-time sessions via video chat in the comfort of a client's own home, she created a resource that makes a potentially intimidating experience conveinent and comfortable. Her project, Pretty Padded Room, launched in February 2011 and offers women therapy on their own time and in their own terms.

It's nice to see young people getting out there and getting their hands dirty by actually DOING something that can have a positive impact on the lives of others. Bea serves as a positive example for other young people striking out and trying to find their niche in this world.
