Left Forum 2010: Prequel

Friday, March 19, 2010

12:50 PM: I am in the sub-basement C of Pace University. The elevator is packed, my audio gear is smashed up against a young woman's leg. She eyes me out of her periphery. An overweight, scraggly-bearded man sits in the corner of the greasy, stainless steel elevator sipping coffee, brushing food particles out of his hair. I wonder how a bagel can make its way into a man's 'do, look over to an older white woman in her 60's holding a tupperware of cheese and crackers. She sips her Starbucks. Both look homeless. It's one of those moments when you look around and feel like you have stumbled into a community hall meeting, an AA gathering, a mental institution. A young black man standing next to me repeats, "We are not moving. We are not moving. We are not moving." And in fact, we are not moving. "JK Fowler: dead. Found having suffocated in Pace University elevator." An interesting beginning to the Left Forum 2010.

Today's events are a smattering of introductory sessions with Bertell Ollman (Dialectics), Richard Wolff (Class), Rod Bush (Race), Nancy Holstrom (Gender) and student panels with a number of Pace University professors, Yale students, Kathryn Johnson (SFU, Vampire Slayer Project), Kathy Emery (SFU, SF Freedom School), Jerry Shapiro (School of Social Work, SFU), Robert Meister (UC Santa Cruz, Council of University of California Faculty).

The crooked lines of attendants and panelists have begun gathering on Spruce Street. Jesse Jackson at 6:30 PM.
