The California State Supreme Court has dealt a blow to the civil rights issue of my generation...
...and it hurts.
In a 6-1 decision the judges decided that Proposition 8, a referendum declaring same-sex marriage illegal (which passed with 52% of the vote), should stand.
In short order, the CA State Supreme Court has allowed discrimination to be written into law.
This goes against a burgeoning national trend allowing same sex marriage. Massachusetts, Iowa, Maine, Vermont and Connecticut allow gay nuptials. Illinois, New York, New Jersey and New Hampshire are teeing up the question in their legislatures--with hardly a whimper of real opposition from the Republican Party.
In New York Times Magazine, Matt Bai reports that 60% of people aged 18-34 support gay marriage. PEW has found the same, CNN too. The older you are, the more likey you are to support a ban on gay marriage.
It appears we have discovered a real generational gap. This is the good news--by the time my peers are running Congress and State Houses legalizing gay marriage will be a no-brainer, if not already accomplished.
The bad news is that on a state-by-state basis gay people in love and willing to tie the knot will have to wait...
Sadly, in this supposed great democracy and beacon of freedom and equality, gay people are less than equal citizens in 45 states.
We should be ashamed. Separate is NOT equal.
And we should continue to fight!
